A retrofit enclosure is the answer to the two problems open-back in-wall speakers create: sound spilling into the next room, and a wall cavity whose volume and construction vary from bay to bay. This Sonance rectangle enclosure, supplied as a pair and sold through the Sonos Architectural by Sonance line, gives each speaker a sealed, consistent back volume instead of whatever happens to be behind the drywall.

Sonance builds it from glass-reinforced polypropylene and rates it at approximately 20 dB of sound isolation, which is meaningful in the places these speakers usually go - a bedroom wall shared with a media room, an office next to a family space, a hallway above a nursery. The consistent enclosed volume also tightens up bass response, since the speaker is no longer loading into an unpredictable cavity.

As the name says, it is a retrofit part: it installs into an existing wall through the speaker cutout, so no framing access is required. For new construction, specify the flex bracket instead. It fits the Visual Performance rectangle format used by Sonos In-Wall by Sonance speakers.
