The Shure UL4 UniPlex is a subminiature cardioid lavalier made for spoken word. Its directional pickup favors the talker and rejects sound from the sides and rear, which helps when a presenter stands near loudspeakers, shares a stage with other open mics, or works in a lively room. That makes it a strong choice for conference presentations, lecture halls, houses of worship and broadcast interviews where an omni lav would pick up too much of the room.
This version comes in a tan finish that blends against skin tones and light clothing, and it ends in a LEMO3 connector. The LEMO version is intended only for Shure bodypack transmitters and preamplifiers with a LEMO input. The capsule measures 17 x 5 mm and uses a MEMS element with a cardioid design, giving 40 Hz to 20 kHz response, 130 dB SPL maximum level and a low 32 dB(A) self-noise. It runs on the same 1.6 mm Shure Plex cable used by the TwinPlex line, with a dual redundant ground that also serves as a secondary shield. A storage case, snap-fit windscreen and single tie clip are included.
